What is the Tango Desktop Project?

The Tango Desktop Project exists to create a consistent user experience for free and Open Source software with graphical user interfaces.

While the look and feel of an application is determined by many components the initial work has been done on unifying the look of the individual icon sets.

Tango defines a standard icon style guidelines document that applications and desktop enviroments can adhere to. Work has started on creating a new base icon theme based on a standard icon naming specification. In addition, we provide transition utilities to create icon themes for existing GNOME and KDE desktops.

Eventually, the Tango Desktop initiative aims to provide:

Who is involved?

We are engineers, artists, and user interface designers. We'd like you to be involved.

Join us in our effort to produce a native Linux look and feel by contributing to the guidelines, improve applications (by making them follow specs, etc.), design artwork, and spread the word.

Interested contributors from Gnome, KDE, and other free and open source projects are all welcome. We invite anyone working on software to follow the specifications defined here, as well as on FreeDesktop.org.

You can file bugs against the tango module in the freedesktop.org bugzilla in case it's related to the style guideline or the actual icon library.

Style naming specification, the style guideline matters, artistic workflows and all other aspects of the Tango project can be discussed in the Tango-artists mailing list.
